When most women want to flash some skin, they’d probably ditch the tights or slipping into a low-cut top, but there’s another option that’s rarely considered. Backless clothing is underrated; it has the power to look both sexy and classy, ladylike yet empowering – this is one way of flashing skin where you’ll never look promiscuous (as long as you keep your necklines high.) Every A-Lister worth her salt has sported the look on the red carpet and flashed her back to the paparazzi, and if they’ve taught us anything, it’s that this look is universally flattering. And it’s not just for the evening, either. Take a floral dress, cut out the back, add a halter neck tie and you’ve got perfect summer wear (tanned back guaranteed.) Swimsuits and even wedding dresses have discovered the style, so why is this something a lot of women shy away from?
Of course, there’s the bra issue. No-one wants their bra strap cutting across their back on display, and backless dresses are unforgiving. But fear not, for a large variety of backless bras are available on the market; from completely strapless ones that cup your breast and cling on dangerously, to ordinary bras where the straps cross and entwine everywhere except your back. Or there’s the daring option, to ditch the bra altogether, but suggest that to a larger-breasted woman and she’d stare at you in horror. What you choose is up to you, but try to avoid those “invisible” bra straps – clear plastic is, repeat after me, not invisible. If you’re feeling self-conscious (after all, this isn’t an area we get to check very often), the amount of back you display is up to you; cut-out detail looks edgy and with a bit of luck, can hide any bra straps lurking underneath. But rest-assured this style looks great on anyone; just try to avoid showing a bit too much back – there’s a limit to how low you can go!
