How do?
Let me start this by giving massive congratulations to all who attended or put effort into the NUS Demo on Wednesday the 10th. From conversations I have had both with locals and MP’s at the time, it is clear that we made a positive and distinct message to the government. Unfortunately, as you will be aware, events at Millbank marred what was a successful day, and further to this some, in my view, idiots have come out praising the actions of vandalism and violence to ordinary members of the public. These people have a further agenda, and although I strongly value free speech and the right to debate, I implore you to ignore them and not to let them suck you into arguing with them. They will not change their mind and see the damage that they caused, and to waste breath on them is to validate them. Let’s focus on the positive, let’s focus on the 50,000 students protesting peacefully, let’s focus on the 350 students from Hull who voiced their concern, and (I never thought I would hear myself say this) let’s focus on the great work that the NUS is doing in saving our Universities. The fight has only just begun, we have thrown the first punch but now the toil starts and there is still plenty that you can be doing, yes you, you sat here reading this, you can make a difference. NUS President Aaron Porter has this message:
‘Usman Ali (Vice President Higher Education) and I (Aaron Porter) will be co-ordinating The Education ‘write-off’ having been inspired by the officers at Edinburgh University Students’ Association who in just two days got 1000 of their students to write to MPs about the upcoming vote on raising fees. So using EUSA as the case study we are encouraging every students’ union to aim for 1000 letters to be sent from their students to home MPs on Thursday 18th November. In the run up to the vote in Parliament, this will increase the pressure on MPs, and it’s important we are consistently hitting the mailbox of politicians. Following EUSA’s success we will be issuing a step by step guide to how to make this action a success – as I have said before, the more pressure we can pile on MPs the better.’
So keep checking the NUS website to see what kind of things you can be doing: http://www.nus.org.uk/
In other news, I am concentrating on two main things this Movember, firstly on December 1st from 4pm – 8pm students will be down in force at the Newland Avenue Christmas Lights Switch On. Preparations have not been finalised yet – we are still looking for performers, buskers, jugglers, dancers, singers and any other kind of person to show off their skills down the avenue. Please, if you are interested, get in contact with myself asap by emailing T.Peel@hull.ac.uk. The second major project that I am working on, alongside Suzie and the advice centre team, is The Scheme. The Scheme is meant to make landlords adhere to a minimum quality standard of housing for students, but we feel over the last few years it has been ineffective at its task, and as such, we are working as hard as we can to make this better for you.
As always, any issues that you may face or if you just want a chat, pop into my office in the Volunteering Hub or give me a tinkle on my email above.
Hugs and Kisses

P.S, if you are wondering why Adam Sheridan, Ash Lord and myself are sporting rather fetching facial hair, we are raising money for Movember, a charity that is hoping to change the face of men’s health by raising money for Prostate and Testicular Cancer research. You can donate to this very worthy cause at http://uk.movember.com/donate/your-details/member_id/585846/
