Aidan: HUU in The City, HUU in London

It has been a hectic two weeks for all, in which HUU broke new ground and maintained long standing traditions.

HUU broke new ground on Wednesday 3rd November by exporting itself into the centre of Hull and due to the commitment of 203 students it was a great success. 733 members of the public engaged with netball, LINKS, JamRadio, RAG, Hullfire, cheerleading, hockey and many, many more groups, and we successfully reached a much wider audience through radio and TV coverage focusing on the positive contribution of students on the city. I thank all those students who attended for their help and hard work in showing the under reported, but critical, work of students for our community.

On the following Wednesday HUU maintained its tradition of playing an important role in the national student movement by transporting 350 students to London for the national NUS/UCU demonstration against proposed tuition fee rises and cuts to the HE sector. Despite eventful journeys there and back to which our great newspaper bore the brunt of, we made our contribution to a peaceful demonstration to demonstrate the upset and distress felt by many students and lecturers towards the government’s proposals. We measure this upset by the numbers we took to London and in the referendum held in March this year asking Hull students which funding model for higher education.

For both of these events HUU’s Media has given a great contribution to which we as Sabbatical Officers can only be impressed with and thankful for. 200 Hullfire copies were handed out at HUU in the city, while JamRadio broadcast live and HUU:TV covered every inch of the event. Media also came out in force to London; a difficult trip to ask students to attend with Wednesday’s being such a busy time but to see so many from media attend is an awesome effort that Ekram should rightly be proud of. They did not have the smoothest of journeys to and from London and for that we apologise and have written to the coach company in complaint. We will also be looking to reimburse all those who had to use the underground to complete the journey to the demonstration. If you were one of those please come and see me in my office. It is clear media is having a great year, impressing all around the union, I offer my support to you in anyway in the same vein you have supported me so that this great start to the year is able to continue, best wishes and many thanks to all HUU media.

Love Aidan
