Now then you plucky reader, how do?

I hope you have been enjoying Hullfire’s new newspaper format, I think you will agree that it looks great and allows for much more to be packed into its overflowing pages. As I write this, I am recovering from returning from an NUS conference on Society and Citizenship in Liverpool. The conference itself was good, but it made me extremely proud to be a member of HUU, as it was evident that we were one of the most active and best student unions in the country. Time after time I noticed that other SUs were coming to me to see how HUU solved a problem that their SU is currently facing. The fact that I was able to answer so confidently and comprehensively is down to you guys as the students – the blood, sweat and tears that you put into HUU is absolutely fantastic and nothing short of inspirational! A big thank you and well done to each and every one of you.

As always Community has been busy, over 100 of you turning up to our campus wide game of Hide and Seek was a great end to Student Safety week, which saw us out and about finding out what you had experienced in terms of crime and safety. As a result of this we will be loaning bike locks from reception for £15 which you will get back when you return the lock, whether that be in a day or a year’s time, amongst other things.

Looking ahead we launch our Funding our Future campaign in early November. We have a debate in Asylum on 1st November at 6pm where there is a strong possibility that yours truly will be advocating keeping the cap. On the 3rd we will be going into Hull as part of HUU in the city, which you are warmly invited to, and tickets have now gone on sale for the National Demo in London on the 10th – just £5 sees you getting return travel to London and a free t-shirt!!! For more information you can go to: www.hullstudent.com/fundingourfuture

Finally, I wouldn’t be VP Community if I didn’t advocate you all to get involved in societies, ISA, media, volunteering and RAG – it really does MAKE your university time! Also in case you start wondering why HUU Sabbs and staff have started growing odd facial hair, we are all part of Movember, which raises money for prostate and testicular cancer. I will be growing a wicked piece of facial hair all November, and you can too; join team HUUstache at http://uk.movember.com/register/101464 ! If you don’t want to, why not sponsor me by going to http://uk.movember.com/donate/ and searching for Sir Tommy O’Peel?

Nice one!
