Wheely Blogs

After 3 months of organising and the furore of Welcome Week and its unforgiving aftershocks,  I felt it was a worthy time to sit down and reflect on what the Education Zone has achieved so far, and how it is moving forward…

First of all, the Course Rep system has seemingly leapt into new realms of popularity, with more students than ever putting themselves forward and nominating themselves. A great effort was put into publicising the system and speaking to as many students as possible during the first 2 weeks of semester, but this hard work has seemingly all paid off. I would personally like to thank every student that nominated themselves and congratulate those who were successful in their election.

Training will commence next week and all Course Reps will be emailed with details. As Course Reps, you will also receive a free wristband as well as a Course Rep handbook! We are in the process of organising our first Academic Council and Course Rep Social so watch out for those too!

Week 3 also saw the election of 7 Senate Reps and also 5 Education Zone members. I would like to thank everyone who ran for these positions and say a big well done to those who were successful! There will of course be training provided for these posts next week.

During these nominations and elections weeks, I have also been out at various partner colleges doing focus groups. These have been completed for the University’s Collaborative Provision Audit and next week we will be writing our Students Written Submission with all our findings of the issues raised.

This week has also been a fairly shocking one in terms of the national interest of students. With the Lord Browne review recommending that fees could be unlimited and turn into an open market, it has never been more important for students to mobilise and take an active interest in their education. HUU will be taking part in the NUS: Fund Our Future campaign taking place on the 10th of November and are hoping to take more than 250 students down to London to raise awareness and lobby the government for fairer funding.

Also, this year, we are working hard gaining evidence for a big, big library campaign. Titled: “A vision for the future of the library” our paper will be seeking wide consultation from both students and university staff at both Hull and other Universities on what direction our University’s library should be steered towards. We are hoping that we can keep video logs of students and staff that will amalgamate into one massive video campaign, so watch out for this over the coming months.

Thanks for reading this, and if you have any questions or would like to get in contact, please feel free to get in touch.

Wheely xx
