David Baddiel’s latest offering sees Omid Djalili as Mahmud Nasir, the head of a rather relaxed Muslim family. After the death of his mother, it falls to him to clear her house, while doing so, he comes across a certificate of adoption. After a little more ‘digging’ he finds out that he was born to a Jewish family under the name Solly Shimshillewitz.
What follows is a brilliant identity crisis as Mahmud’s life is thrown up in the air as he has to bend over backwards to impress a devout Muslim cleric to get his blessing for his son’s wedding while taking lessons in ‘Jewishness’ from a self loathing alcoholic cab driver called Lenny (played brilliantly by Richard chiff).
The Infidel is consistently funny, with Djalili and Schiff making a brilliant double act as Lenny and Mahmud as they form an unlikely and lasting friendship through their explorations of their religions and their similarities.
