Fashion Fetishes

Over the past few years, fashion has seen a rise in what could only be described as fetish fashion. Last year we saw latex and leather take over the catwalks, with clinched waists and super tight bodycon re-inventing the female silhouette. Last season’s platform heels hit the high street like nothing else, and it seemed as though the porn star look had truly returned. This season however, in the lead up to spring, the male-dominated world of fashion is finally giving women a break. A quick look at the cover of February’s Vogue tells you all you need to know. The innocent look is decisively making a re-appearance, with soft pastel colours and delicate lace breaking out from the dark, vampire-chic of the winter. The call-girl look is out, and the virginal look is in.
On the spring/summer ’10 catwalks underwear was worn as outerwear. This underdressed look however was neither raunchy, nor pornographic. At Christian Dior, silky lingerie was worn with dainty opaque, chiffon dresses. Yves Saint Laurent merged basques into dresses to create subtle, feminine shapes, and Jean Paul Gaultier draped masculine military jackets and knee-length skirts over coral pink, silk, boned bras. A girl’s underwear therefore, is more important now than ever. Worn under lace bodysuits, and revealing chiffon blouses, it is important to keep underwear innocent, rather than sexy. When shopping for underwear for your girlfriend this Valentine’s day, bear this in mind.
So, how to buy the perfect underwear:

Size: This may sound obvious, but do check on size before you go shopping for underwear for a girl, don’t just guess. Bras need to be exactly the right size or they are un-wearable.

Colour: You might think that red and black look stunning, but that’s not the ideal colour range for every girl. Underwear should be a present for her, not just for you, so stop thinking harlot, and start thinking about her. Pinks, peaches, and nude are all spot on colour trend in fashionable underwear this season, however judge this by what sort of underwear she normally wears – does she usually go for bright colours or more subtle tones?

Style: Basques have made a re-appearance on the catwalk this season, however not every girl feels comfortable wearing one of these. Check your girlfriend’s underwear drawer before you go shopping for her. See what kind of underwear she might go for. Does she wear under-wired bras or padded ones? Does she wear French knickers or girl-boxers? If she doesn’t own any thongs, don’t buy her a thong. You want to impress her, not offend her. Remember that we are living in a post-Bridget Jones society. Most women favour big pants over string ones these days. In addition to this, try and avoid things like suspender belts, and corsets, as it’s very unlikely that she will want to wear these on a day-to-day basis. Don’t use your present as a way of trying to persuade her to be more kinky, because this will only irritate her. The perfect gift of lingerie would be something she can wear every day, but still feel sexy in. Crotchless knickers and boned corsets do not come into this category! And finally, avoid buying shaping underwear such as push-up bras, or padded bras, unless she normally wears these, as this only gives the message that you think her breasts are too small, or not uplifted enough!
