Turkish Delight

— Natalie Lyall-Grant samples a refreshing continental taste available closer to home than you might expect

Fine dining and international ambience might not be qualities that you associate with Hull, however, Mimosa Turkish restaurant offers an experience that is certainly a cut above the rest, without breaking the bank. With polite and charming waiting staff who give the impression that you are a guest in their house rather than a customer, this large and airy restaurant provides the perfect setting for a romantic meal or celebration. Mimosa’s menu is refreshingly unique, boasting authentic Turkish food with a great range of vegetarian options. The wine menu is also extensive and relatively cheap, with a bottle of house wine starting at around £10. We felt the restaurant had a great atmosphere with its open kitchen and cheerful staff. The clean and modern décor and Turkish music almost made us forget we were in dreary England! We opted for the set menu at £18.50 per person which began with a range of hot and cold starters including well seasoned mushrooms, tangy vine-leaves, deliciously chunky humous, fruity cous-cous and feta cheese wrapped in filo pastry, amongst other things. We were assured that everything was homemade, which was very evident from the fresh taste of the food. For the main course we had a choice of fish, vegetables or meat grill, which were all charcoal cooked. We selected swordfish and chicken, which were both cooked to perfection, well marinated and had a lovely texture to them, with rice, vegetables and a spicy sauce as an accompaniment. After all this food we were beginning to doubt whether or not we would be able to stomach our pudding, but the melt-in-yourmouth baklava, smooth vanilla ice-cream, rice pudding and figs coated in syrup actually cleansed our palates nicely after our heavy meal. I was very impressed by the standards at Mimosa and felt that the prices were extremely reasonable for such large portions of flavoursome food. Based in the student area of Beverly road, Mimosa even offers a 20% student discount on food and drink and I can quite easily say it is the best restaurant I have eaten at since I moved to Hull.
